There are a lot of disconnects within formal art training. A lot of the time, people with incredible vision are not so great at articulating what is driving them towards that vision. At the same time, those who can articulate and teach well might lack that vision. Personally, I'm thankful to have focused on theory more than production while in school. It does sound frustrating at times. I'll always say that the best part of schooling is learning to communicate with a history of tradition in art, even if it is to eschew the whole thing.
